WHY DO I NEED MASTERING FOR MY MUSIC?
Because you love the music you have created and want the final product to be the best it can be.
Mastering can make a flat muddy sounding song come to life in a big way. All professional and small recording studio recordings need mastering, don’t let the big guys fool you, once an album or track is recorded it goes straight to a mastering house. Mastering is a must if you want your music to come alive, you will get a proper final EQ, compression, level gain and even noise reduction. Some things you may not know or be able to hear are frequencies that are not audible to to human ears, sub lows are highs can ruin a great song. Also you will see your tracks come together with the same levels and dynamics which is important to a cohesive album, there is just not anything more annoying than turning up and down your volume and changing the EQ settings on the stereo when tracks change.
Just because your tracks sounds great now give mastering a try and I bet you will be blown away with the result.
(EXAMPLE): I sent a demo from a friends band to a high end record label that was not mastered and I never heard back from that label, I mastered the album for them and then resent the same album to the same label but now mastered! 6 months later you can guess that phone rang the next week and signed a 3 album deal and last I heard on tour in Japan.
WHAT IS MASTERING?
Mastering is the process of optimizing your recording, the main goal of mastering is to make the overall loudness, compression, limiting, dynamics and frequency levels (bass, treble and mid range) match the volume and frequency levels of other professional recordings of similar style/arrangement and, more importantly, match each other. Also when looking for an original sound mastering can achieve a sound you never thought possible.
You will also get (assuming you will have a CD master sent to you) CD TEXT information embedded in and also CROSS-FADES can be worked into the CD as well.
Some of the processes of mastering:
* compression
* limiting
* noise reduction
* sequencing
* editing
* leveling
* fading in/out
* signal restoration
COHESIVENESS
Without a good professional master your music will sound different on all different sound systems, it may sound decent at home on your stereo but it may sound sloppy and dead in your car, with mastering you will find a cohesiveness with your newly mastered project on all systems and also on the local clubs sound system.
FINAL
Finally, you took the time to record your album, mix your album and now it is time to finalize your finished mixes. Mastering is a must if you want to have yourself a more satisfying final product, don’t let a record label pass you up because you never finished the finalizing process.
